Tennessee State comes up short in overtime against Alabama A&M, 85-83

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Tennessee State men’s basketball team out-rebounded the Alabama A&M Bulldogs 42-41, but fell 85-83 on the road Wednesday.

The Tigers (5-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Kinyon Hodges, who had 19 points, six rebounds, four assists and five steals. Ej Bellinger added 19 points and Christian Brown helped out with 17 points and seven rebounds from the bench.

The Tennessee State offense was strong from downtown, pouring in eight threes on 24 attempts. Brown hit three treys for the Tigers in the contest.

The Tennessee State defense caused its share of mistakes in Wednesday’s game, forcing 16 Alabama A&M turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Hodges’ five steals led the way individually for the Tigers.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 20-19 advantage, Tennessee State went on a 10-0 run with 8:00 left in the first half to increase its lead to 30-19. The Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 37-29 advantage. Tennessee State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 12 of its 37 total points.

Tennessee State kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by David Acosta’s layup, to grow the lead to 46-36 with 17:33 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs then fought back to even things up at 75-75 and send the game to overtime. Tennessee State took care of business in the paint, recording 22 of its 38 points in the lane.

Alabama A&M then edged ahead in overtime, leaving Tennessee State behind 85-83 at the final buzzer.
